The game was built for two players. As of today a match can have up to eight, humans and computer opponents mixed however you like, as a free-for-all or in teams.

What that looks like:

  • Host a lobby and share the room code, or find a game in the public browser
  • Each map caps the seats at the number of start positions it has
  • If someone drops out, a teammate or the computer takes over their army and the match carries on
  • Allies share vision and can't hurt each other

A warning, though. So far only 1v1 has been played online between real people. The bigger games pass my tests, but nobody has sat down with seven friends and tried one yet. If you get four or more together and something goes wrong, I want to hear about it.

Language model commanders don't work in online matches. Picking one in a multiplayer lobby gives you the Hard computer opponent instead. The blog post How multiplayer works in a browser RTS explains why, and Going from two players to eight covers what had to change.
