For its first month you could only look at Shards of Stone from straight above. That's changing.

There's now a Modern 3D render mode. The camera tilts and orbits, so you can drop it low and look along a valley. Units are models that turn smoothly to face where they're walking, and buildings cast shadows from a sun that moves.

Worth knowing:

  • It's opt-in. Classic 2D is still there and still the default.
  • Not everything has a model yet. Anything without one shows up as a flat 2D picture standing in the 3D world.
  • The rules didn't change at all. A dwarf on a given tile is on that tile in both views, takes the same damage and walks the same route.

Switch it on in Settings under Render Mode and have a look around. The long version, including what broke first, is on the blog: Rebuilding a 2D game in 3D.
